That nothing, it’s just good. The bad reputation of this mixture is nothing more than a myth, intentionally fabricated during the Colonial period of Brazil. “Milk was, at that time, a very rare and expensive food, exclusive to the bosses, the planters. As they did not want this precious product to be consumed by slaves, they invented and spread the legend, which has survived until today”, says nutritionist Anita Sachs, from the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp). Therefore, it was up to the slaves to be content with the fruits of the mango trees, which, unlike milk, were abundant in the large rural properties.

The two foods actually make a pretty healthy combination. “Mango contains high levels of great nutrients, such as carotene and pro-vitamin A – in addition to being a source of vitamin C, phosphorus, iron, calcium, lipids and protein”, says agronomist Elizabeth Ferraz da Silva Torres, from Faculty of Public Health at the University of São Paulo (USP) and author of the book Food in Question – A Technical Approach to the Most Common Questions. Milk, in turn, is rich in protein, calcium, vitamins A and D, riboflavin, phosphorus and magnesium. Moral of the story: a mango cocktail with milk guarantees plentiful doses of vitamins and mineral salts, one of the most important for the human body.
