Why do we stretch?

Even with the body immobilized during sleep, the nervous system continues to send electrical impulses to the muscles, keeping them tense. “When we stay in the same posture for a long time, a part of the muscles suffers, because they are stretched or contracted too much”, says Carlos Ugrinowipsch, professor of physical education at the University of São Paulo. Stretching moves the muscles and activates blood circulation, reducing tension and preparing the body for a new activity. The act is so beneficial for the organism that virtually all animals do it. Sometimes, however, it can cause pain. In the muscle, there are structures that regulate the length of the fibers, to prevent it from overstretching. When we overdo stretching, they trigger pain to let us know it’s time to stop.
