How is poker played?

(Disclosure/Disclosure)

Poker is based on two basic variables: the combination of cards received and the ability to bluff, that is, making other opponents believe that you have a better or worse game than you really do.

The best possible combination is the straight 10, J, Q, K and A of the same suit, known as the Royal Straight Flush. If you have a game like this in your hands, the challenge is to make your opponents think that you don’t have a very good game, otherwise they’ll give up on the game. And in poker the longer the game lasts, the more money (or chips) is accumulated at the table. The player who is unlucky enough to receive cards with no combination has to do the opposite process: make everyone believe that he has a very good game, which makes everyone run away from the dispute.

In Brazil, poker has become increasingly popular thanks to disputes broadcast mainly on cable TV channels (such as ESPN). But it is worth remembering that the Brazilian Penal Code prohibits gambling in general. And if there’s a game where luck and bad luck weigh a lot, it’s poker.

Make your bets

In texas hold’em, the style of poker they play on TV, the thing is to mix the cards in your hand with those on the board1.

To start the game, a minimum of two people are required, but there is no maximum limit. Before even starting the round, each player – in our simulation, the game starts with five – places the minimum bet on the table, called “pingo”2. Each player is dealt two cards and five are placed on the table, face down, out of sight. Before starting to play for real, depending on the combination of the two cards received, players can already place a bet. Anyone who thinks they are doing very badly may not cover the bet and leave the game.

3. Three of the five cards on the table are dealt face up. These cards are collective, that is, they are used by all players, combining them with the two they have in their hands. The player to the left of the dealer (called the dealer) is the first to bet. The others can call, raise, or fold. In our example, a player jumps out

4. After all players bet or fold, the fourth card on the board, known as the turn, is dealt and a new round of betting begins. In this round, players have six cards available (two in hand and four on the table) to make the best combination of five. Two more players fold

5. The dealer turns over the fifth and final card on the board, called the river. In our game, only two players remain in the game. As all collective cards are open, players bet until one of them gives up or doesn’t want to put more money in the hand – they can bet as many times as they want

6. If the players are no longer willing to bet and do not want to give up the game, they come to show their cards. There’s no excuse: whoever has the most powerful combination (see the sidebar) wins the game and takes everything that was bet during the game

Unity makes strength
