Not only are tomatoes a fruit, but eggplant, zucchini, cucumbers, peppers and other foods that we call vegetables are too. Fruit is the matured ovary of a plant, where the seeds are. The confusion arises because we are used to calling salty fruits vegetables. If you think your life has been a lie so far, know that there are also foods that we call fruit, but are not. These are pseudofruits – succulent structures that look and feel like a fruit, but do not develop from the ovary of the plant, like real fruits. This is the case of strawberries, cashews, apples, pears and pineapples, among others.
