Why do some people have dimples of their faces?

(/)

Most often, this trait is inherited from parents or ancestors. Anatomically, people have dimples because their fibrous tissue adheres between the skin and the jaw bone (in the chin) or between the skin and the muscles of the face (in the face). The skin is “tightened”, causing a small retraction. On the chin, it is exposed all the time. But on the face it appears or is accentuated when the person smiles, because the muscle of the face stretches, pulling the upper layers of the skin inward.

Celebrities like Cameron Diaz, Kirsten Dunst and Leonardo DiCaprio have dimples and, believe me, they are an inspiration for many people looking for plastic surgery clinics. “It is a high-risk procedure, as it is very difficult to make the dimples absolutely symmetrical on both sides of the cheek”, says plastic surgeon Miguel Sabino, from the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp). Also, artificial dimples stay on the face all the time. Scary.
