Plastic dog crates put to the test
Karlie Airplane Box Nomad
As the name suggests, the Karlie Nomad aircraft box is suitable for air travel and meets IATA requirements.
The plastic dog transport box is very stable, extra heavy and resilient plastics were used for this.
The large door is made of metal and is secured with a special locking mechanism that prevents your dog from opening the door on its own.
The box is available in different sizes and can therefore be used for both small dogs and XXL dogs of the appropriate size.
A feeding bowl is also included.
Ferplast transport box Atlas
This plastic dog transport box fits easily into the trunk of most car models. The slanted sides ensure that the box does not take up too much space.
This plastic dog box is made of durable, particularly robust thermoplastic material.
The box is closed with a two-way steel sliding door. This can be opened to the right and left.
Since this is not a normal door that you fold open, the box can be opened easily even in tight spaces.
The door is equipped with a safety lock so that your four-legged friend cannot free himself.
Large ventilation grilles, side handles and integrated storage compartments complete the very good overall picture.
Skudo 3 Iata
The plastic dog box from Skudo is very reminiscent of Karlie’s model.
Both products look very similar. A large plastic box with a metal door that closes with a safety catch.
Unlike the Karlie box, the side ventilation slots on the Skudo box are made of plastic.
However, the different materials do not detract from the functionality. The box is well ventilated and offers your four-legged friend a far-reaching view of his surroundings.
If you plan to travel by plane with your dog, you can make the box airworthy with an additional set. It is important that the IATA requirements are met.
However, for more detailed information as to whether the box is suitable for flights, the respective airline should be consulted, as the regulations may differ from provider to provider.

Purchase advice
What is special about a plastic dog transport box?
A plastic dog box has many advantages. It is stable, easy to clean and is in the middle price range. They are available in various sizes. For very large dogs, which also weigh a certain amount, there are plastic boxes with wheels. So you don’t have to carry the box, you can push it comfortably – for example at the airport. Some boxes can be folded to save space.
However, plastic can also have disadvantages. The boxes are usually much more stable than boxes made of fabric, but the most common weak point in plastic boxes is the transition from the plastic casing to the ventilation grilles. At this point, the material is often relatively thin. Dogs of sufficient strength can push the grille out with their snout or paw and then have unobstructed access to the plastic coating which cannot withstand a dog’s claws and teeth. A plastic box is therefore not ideal for real escape artists.
Overall, plastic is a good choice for dogs that aren’t actively trying to escape.
What size should a plastic dog crate be?
Contrary to what many dog owners think, a dog box can not only be too small, but also too big. Both bring problems.
A box that is too small is uncomfortable for the dog, he has to squeeze himself into the box. It’s a bit like when we humans have to sleep in a bed that’s too small or on a tiny sofa.
It’s uncomfortable and in the worst case scenario, you get tension and pain. We don’t want to do that to our four-legged friends. In addition, a bad experience with a dog crate often means that the next time the dog no longer wants to sit in it voluntarily.
But even a box that is too big can be dangerous. If the dog has too much space, it can happen that the dog is thrown around in its box during stronger driving manoeuvres, such as a sharp curve or sudden braking. This can lead to painful bruises, but also to very serious injuries and should be avoided at all costs.
The perfect box should therefore be neither too small nor too big. As a rule of thumb, the dog should be able to stand up, turn around and lie stretched out.
Conclusion
In my test, the Ferplast car transport box won.
This model impresses with a well thought-out design. The sliding door allows the box to be opened anywhere without the door getting in the way. Safety locks prevent the dog from being able to free itself from the plastic dog transport box.
The large ventilation grilles ensure a good view and a temperature balance. The additional storage compartments, in which accessories can be stowed away, are also positive to mention.
