This guide will tell you what you need to know about Trocoxil for dogs in terms of use, dosage, side effects, etc.

Trocoxil for dogs: what it is and what it is used for

Trocoxil in dogs is called Pain and inflammation inhibitors for joint diseases used, which are degenerative in nature.

This can be both arthrosis and the knee joint disease patellar luxation, to which some dog breeds are particularly susceptible, such as the Yorkshire Terrier.

In addition, elbow dysplasia/ED and hip dysplasia/HD can occur, especially in large dog breeds.

These are also joint diseases in which Trocoxil can be administered after consultation with the attending veterinarian.

Trocoxil contains the active substance mavacoxib. This belongs to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs/NSAIDs, also known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs/NSAIDs.

This causes the blockage of certain enzymes and hormones that are responsible for pain and inflammation.

Trocoxil is available for dogs as a tablet in five strengths: 6mg, 20mg, 30mg, 75mg and 95mg mavacoxib.

IMPORTANT

Dosage and use of Trocoxil in dogs is ALWAYS decided by the veterinarian, but never by yourself. Self-administration of medication can be very dangerous!

The correct use and dosage of Trocoxil for dogs

A dog treated with Trocoxil gets 2 mg of mavacoxib per kilogram of body weight.

Good to know

It is important that the application does not take place every day, but at intervals of 14 days. Only then is a second dose allowed with the above dose.

The interval until the next dose of Trocoxil to your fur nose is then extended again. Gabe #3 is then only recommended again after a month.

The following table shows you what the dosage looks like depending on the body weight of the dog:

Trocoxil is mostly used in dogs as a long-term therapy. The duration of use should not exceed six and a half months.

What side effects can Trocoxil cause in dogs?

The side effects that can occur from taking Trocoxil in dogs are Vomiting, soft faeces to diarrhea and loss of appetite.

These side effects are a reaction to the active ingredient, which belongs to NSAIDs and is not initially well tolerated by all dogs.

These side effects usually subside after a short time and are no reason to go to the vet out of concern.

However, kidney problems can be one of the long-term effects of mavacoxib. And you should discuss this possible consequence in detail with your veterinarian in advance.

Also, by an application not recommended for pregnant or already lactating bitches.

What alternatives are there to Trocoxil for dogs?

Alternatives to Trocoxil for dogs are medications that have a have analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, such as Novalgin.

This medicine contains the active substance metamizole sodium. Novalgin as the first alternative makes sense if your dog has had negative experiences with Trocoxil.

If an NSAID is to blame for the intolerance, you should of course keep your hands off all painkillers that contain such an active ingredient.

Other alternatives can be medicines with carprofen – for example Rimadyl for dogs – as well as some cortisone-containing medicines.

However, we generally advise against this because these drugs can have extreme long-term consequences.
