Metrovis dog: application, dosage & side effects

Metrovis for the dog is an antibiotic that is given when a bacterial infection is present.

Please note that all medicines for dogs must only be administered if the veterinarian sees fit, including Metrovis.

You will now find out what you need to consider with Metrovis in terms of use, dosage and side effects.

Metrovis for dogs: what it is and what it is used for

Metrovis for dogs contains the active substance metronidazole. This belongs to the group of antibiotics and is therefore used in bacterial diseases.

These infections primarily affect the gastrointestinal tract, the urinary tract, the throat of the dog and the skin.

Here, certain bacteria are the main triggers for diseases that make administration of Metrovis for dogs necessary.

Clostridium difficile and Giardia spp. are two pathogens against which Metrovis is effective for dogs – and thus in the case of both Giardia and Clostridia infestation.

Metrovis for dogs is available in metronidazole concentrations of 100 mg, 250 mg and 750 mg.

The correct use and dosage of Metrovis for dogs

The right dose Metronidazole for Dogs is 50 mg per kilogram of body weight per day.

How many Metrovis tablets are for your furry friend depends on their weight.

The following table shows what this can look like, using the example of Metrovis for dogs 100 mg tablets:

Dog body weight/kgNumber of tablets in the morningNumber of tablets in the eveningTotal number of tablets/day2kg½ tablet½ tablet1 tablet3kg¾ tablet¾ tablet1.5 tablets4kg1 tablet1 tablet2 tablets5kg1.25 tablets1.25 tablets2.5 tablets8kg2 tablets2 tablets4 tablets

For larger and heavier dogs, it then makes sense to use Metrovis for dogs in a higher concentration of metronidazole, for example 250 mg.

IMPORTANT

The administration takes place at a fairly precise interval of 12 hours, since an antibiotic loses its effect after this time. So you should be very specific here.

You can put Metrovis for the dog directly in your furry friend’s mouth, as long as it plays along without hesitation.

If that doesn’t work, which is not unlikely, you can also mix the recommended number of tablets with her food.

How long does it take for Metrovis to work in dogs?

The effect of Metrovis or metronidazole usually sets in very quickly in dogs – after just 1 to 2 hours.

The application time is a little longer. This is between 5 and 7 days for mild infections.

In the case of more severe diseases, it is also possible that dogs are treated with Metrovis for longer than this period.

This is the case, for example, when Giardia is the trigger for diarrhea and the like. Here veterinarians recommend antibiotic treatment for a total of 10 days.

This is the only way to ensure that the Giardia have actually been rendered harmless.

Our tip

A probiotic during and after antibiotic therapy is an important supplement so that your dog’s intestinal flora is not overly affected by the medication.
