The story of Higgins, a loveable German shepherd, is one of heartbreaking rejection.
He came to the shelter as a young puppy and was immediately adopted.
However, life in his first home is far from ideal and he soon ends up back at the Humane Society of Preble County in Ohio and has been a long-term resident ever since.
He’s been behind bars here for almost his entire life – but the volunteers aren’t willing to give up the sheepdog.
A lonely life in a dark corner
Higgins’ once playful spirit has turned to sadness. Day after day he crouches in a lonely corner and his hope fades with each passing moment.
As he gets older, his chances of ever finding a loving home diminish.
After so long at the shelter, potential adoptive parents assume something is wrong with Higgins. Why else would he still be here year after year?
The desperate workers at the shelter appeal to the people out there:
Give this sweet and charming boy a fair chance! Don’t let him sink into the loneliness of an unfulfilled life.
A heavenly couple finds each other
And then the miracle happens: Brendon Reed, a man with a big heart, adopts Higgins!
From the start, the two hit it off as if they had always been together.
The joy of everyone involved is overwhelming. Higgins finally got the second chance he so much deserves.
After 2381 days at the shelter, Higgins can finally enjoy sleeping on the couch, snuggling with his human, running around in his own yard and rolling in the grass.
Removed from the stresses of shelter life, Higgins learns what it means to have a father who loves him and makes him feel safe and secure every day.
It’s a happy ending that touches everyone
Years of rejection are over and a new chapter of happiness and affection begins for this brave dog.
It shows us how important it is to give the animals in the shelters a voice and give them a loving home.
