Meloxidyl for dogs: what it is and what it is used for
Meloxidyl for dogs is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug/NSAID pain reliever that is used, among other things, to treat joint inflammation.

This pain can be either acute, i.e. sudden, or chronic in nature.
Furthermore, veterinarians also prescribe Meloxidyl to dogs suffering from fever due to an infection, as the drug has an antipyretic effect.
Meloxidyl for dogs is available in a strength of 1.5 mg/ml. 1.5 mg refers to the active ingredient meloxicam.
Meloxidyl is administered to the dog in the form of a suspension (a liquid with fine solids), which you can easily give with the enclosed syringe.
Proper use and dosage of Meloxidyl for dogs
The first day of treatment with Meloxidyl is the right dose for your dog at 0.2 mg/ml per kilogram of body weight.
From day 2, the Meloxidyl dose is reduced to 0.1 mg/ml per kilogram of body weight. In both cases, you only give Meloxidyl once a day, together with the food.
For example, if your dog weighs 7.5 kilograms, the dosage is as follows:
- Day 1: 7.5 kg x 0.2 mg/ml meloxicam/meloxidyl = 1.5 mg/ml
- from day 2: 7.5 kg x 0.1 mg/ml meloxicam/meloxidyl = 0.75 mg/ml
The syringe is divided into individual weight levels, which makes dosing very easy and safe. This is extremely helpful, especially for small, light weight dogs.
IMPORTANT
Please refrain from giving Meloxidyl to your dog “just like that” as it is a medication. It should not be administered without prior approval from the veterinarian.
How long does it take for Meloxidyl to work in dogs?
Meloxidyl does not have an overnight effect – and so you have to wait about 3 to 4 days until you see a first improvement you can see in your dog.
However, if this does not happen after 10 to 14 days, you should speak to your veterinarian and find an effective alternative for your furry friend.
What side effects can Meloxidyl cause in dogs?
The most common by Meloxidyl Side effects caused in dogs are diarrhea and vomiting.
It is also not unusual if a dog no longer feels very hungry after taking Meloxidyl and does not really feel like doing anything anymore, i.e. it is exhausted.
These side effects disappear after a short time and do not necessarily have to be checked by the veterinarian.
Less funny are these side effects that can also occur: blood in the stool or even kidney failure.

When should I not use Meloxidyl in dogs?
As effective as Meloxidyl may be in most cases, dogs with gastrointestinal disorders, among others, should not be treated with this drug.
Furthermore, it is not recommended to give Meloxidyl to dogs if the following health problems and risks exist:
- Dehydration, including from high fever or diarrhea
- Hypersensitivity/allergy to the active substance meloxicam
- blood clotting disorders
- liver diseases
- Low blood pressure
- kidney problems
- heart problems
Please note that Meloxidyl is also not the right medication for pregnant or lactating bitches.
In addition, puppies should only be treated with Meloxidyl from the 6th week of life, but this should still be discussed with the veterinarian.
