New animal protection dog regulation came into force on January 1st, 2022

Spiked collars and painkillers for animals are prohibited without exception

According to the new regulation, the use of spiked collars and other means that are painful for the animals is strictly prohibited. This also includes collars with spray, sound, ultrasonic or vibration functions. These articles are intended to train the animals away from undesirable behavior by means of punishments. This is also possible with a little patience. The state of Lower Saxony recently submitted an application to the Bundesrat, which should allow exceptions for service dogs via the Animal Welfare Act. From the point of view of , this application must be rejected by the committees.

What is regrettably missing from the regulation from an animal welfare point of view, but which would have a major impact on the well-being of millions of animals, is the mandatory nationwide identification and registration of dogs and cats as well as the regulation of online trade in animals. Although both were recently laid down in the coalition agreement, the new federal government must now tackle these measures promptly in order to prevent enormous animal suffering.
