August 26th is International Dog Day

Hamburg, August 24, 2022 – Friday, August 26, 2022 is International Dog Day. The global foundation for animal welfare would like to take this opportunity to point out to animal lovers that getting a dog is not only a lot of fun, but also a great responsibility. Every year in the summer and holiday season, pets are increasingly handed over to animal shelters or simply abandoned. This year, «corona animals» that were carelessly purchased during the pandemic are also important. A nationwide labeling and registration requirement would be an important step towards containing the problem and would relieve animal shelters enormously.

Animal shelters throughout Germany are increasingly reporting that more and more pets are being given to them and that they are already reaching the limits of their personal and financial capacities. Some have already had to impose recording stops. The reason for this is also given and abandoned pets that were bought carelessly and on impulse during the corona pandemic. This is particularly problematic with dogs that come from the illegal puppy trade and have been placed via online platforms. Now that they are young, these animals often bring with them social disorders or problematic behaviors that make adoption challenging.
