Under the guise of substituting diet sweeteners for the large amounts of sugar in children’s products, some companies have tried to pretend that their products are healthier. In Mexico, a new legislation has reduced the products that may be advertised during children’s hours; however, some such as Nestlé’s Chamyto have achieved a «quality» of being healthy, despite this being fictitious.
We present a series of deliveries where the organization El Poder del Consumidor warns us about products that are deceitful and that, behind a healthy mask, actually harm children due to their ingredients. In today’s installment, we give the turn to Chamyto:
Nestlé Chamyto is promoted as a fermented milk product that helps care for your baby’s tummy with lactobacilli that protect against pathogenic bacteria, but in reality, this product is unhealthy for the following reasons:
Diet sugar: It houses invert sugar and sucralose. The latter is a non-caloric sweetener that is not recommended for consumption by preschoolers and schoolchildren. The amount of sugar contained, 10gr, is equivalent to two coffee spoons of sugar and covers 50 to 66% of the maximum sugar tolerated by a child, according to the American Heart Association (AHA).
Other ingredients: Water, sugar, skim milk powder 4.3% (3.5 ml), pectin, artificial flavor, lactobacilli, sucralose, turmeric, and annatto extract.
