Brazil is a country with many precious stones, mining is present in several of its regions, becoming one of the largest producers in the world, in relation to quality, quantity and great variety. This territory is made up of surfaces with Precambrian, pegmatite and metamorphic rocks, which allows the land to be rich in these minerals.
For almost 150 years, Brazil has led its diamond production, currently being in a very good position in the world production of rough gems classification, according to information from the National Department of Mineral Production, a federal agency, dependent on the Ministry of Mines and Energy based in Brasilia. Among the different jurisdictions in which there are diamonds are Bahia, “Minas Gerais”, “Matto Grosso”, “Ceará”, among others.
Within the other varieties of gemstones found in Brazil, we have emeralds, aquamarines that are abundant, heliodorus widely used to make rings. The opals and agates with an excellent quality also stand out; garnets and rubies prevail in less quantity.
The amethyst is another stone found in large numbers, towards the southern region of the country, in the city of “Rio Grande do Sul”; a site where different kinds of quartz predominate; Agate was discovered in that place, potentially found in Bahia, “Ceará”, “Espirito Santo”, “Mato Grosso”, “Paraíba” and “Minas Gerais”. The opal is specifically located in the «Sierra de Matoes» area; however, aquamarine is found in different parts of Brazil, cataloging the country as the largest producer of these wonderful pieces.
Since the 1980s, this incredible nation has become one of the world’s largest suppliers of emeralds, with the most active process of this mining being in the municipality of “Carnaíba” in the state of Bahia. Likewise, in the Brazilian city of «Pindobacu» on the north side of the same state, the largest emerald ever known was discovered in 2001, which was given the name «Esmeralda Bahía», in honor of that place; although the real value of the magnificent stone is in its size and geological rarity, as it is a black rock with 9 embedded emeralds.
Also, in the city of “Brumado”, known as the mining capital, there is a variant of green tourmaline and in the town of «Malacacheta», Alexandrite is one of the most valuable precious stones discovered; you too, the topaz is produced mainly in the mines of this place, but in the same way, it exists in Ceará and Bahia. However, the ruby is a rare stone in the country, and only exists in small quantities in Bahia and «Santa Catarina».
