One of the most famous jewels in the world and the most desired object for all women, is nothing more and nothing less than the Miss Universe crown. However, throughout its history, the contest has been surrounded by controversy and changes that, of course, include the redesign of the crowns, which are detailed below:
- In 1952, the Finnish Armi Kuusela wins. She wore a miniature replica of the crown worn by Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, and belonged to the Romanov dynasty. She was made of platinum, with 1529 diamonds embedded, on a velvet base, which was tied to the head with a white ribbon.
- In 1953, the French Christiane Martel won the contest. She was given a golden crown, made of metallic bronze, with five small peaks, topped with a small ball, in the center and the largest peak had a small diamond ornament.
- In 1954, the North American winner, Miriam Stevenson, her design was maintained until 1960. This delicate piece consisted of 1,000 cultured black pearls, mounted in solid gold, with a platinum frame, forming 10 peaks, topped with a pearl and an ascending golden star, in the center.
- In 1961 the winner would be the German Marlene Schmidt, this design was maintained until 1962. Its design was classic, thin and symmetrical, adorned with false diamonds, in the shape of a leaf and a 6-pointed star that stood out in the center.
- It was used from 1963, when the Brazilian Ieda Vargas won, until 1969, it was the most iconic, for having the Miss Universe symbol in its center, composed of a woman holding a scepter, framed in an oval. It was made of diamonds with wave-shaped embellishments on the sides.
- In the year 1970, the Puerto Rican Marisol Malaret won the contest. The model was similar to the one used until 1969, with a small variation of the logo, which would have wings, it was the first time that the winner kept the crown.
- Between 2002 and 2007, when Oksana Fyodorova won, the design was the same, inspired by the flight of the phoenix, it was made up of 18 carats of diamonds, 800 diamonds and 120 cultured pearls, valued at 500,000 dollars.
- In 2008, the Venezuelan Dayana Mendoza would wear a crown made of 18-carat white and gold gold, with more than a thousand precious stones, it was valued at 120,000 dollars.
- In 2009, the crown was chosen by netizens and made by the company: «Diamond Nexus Labs». It contained 1,371 precious stones, weighing 416.09 carats and 544.31 grams of gold, 14 and 18 carats.
- In 2014, the Colombian Paulina Vega would win a crown inspired by skyscrapers, from New York. It was manufactured by: «Diamonds International Corporation», it stands out for its white gold base and 5 blue topaz stones, it will be used in the next 10 years and is valued at 300,000 dollars.
