MASONIC SYMBOLS AND THEIR MEANING

Freemasonry is an order based on brotherhood and the meeting of people with similar interests in spirituality, culture and society.. Secrecy reigns in this order and that is why for years it has been the subject of speculation, negative and positive myths that surround it in a halo of mystery, creating curiosity about its beliefs, as well as the well-known Masonic symbols and their meaning.

To belong to Freemasonry, all applicants must pass an initiation rite that includes knowledge of Masonic symbols. Although throughout the history of Freemasonry, its members have been characterized by keeping their beliefs and rites with absolute secrecy, several of the symbols and their meaning have transcended, throwing more clues about the basis of this cult.

Among the most important Masonic symbols are:

the squad: The literal meaning of the square as an object that symbolizes righteousness is used in Freemasonry to represent discipline, one of the first virtues of every member of the lodge; such is the case of Apprentices with first degree.

The first symbolic degree of Apprentice of Freemasonry is represented by a square and a compass open at 45 degrees.. For their part, the members with the second degree use the symbol made up of the square and the compass, but in this case one of the points of the compass rests on the square, leaving the other below. Finally, the symbolic third degree also called Master is represented by a square with a compass on it.

Of course, the compass as a companion to the squad also involves a symbology. The compass symbolizes equality and freedom, depending on its location with respect to the square, the compass represents for first grade apprentices, the discipline they must demonstrate before having greater responsibilities. For second grade classmates it represents the knowledge they must assimilate and mature before putting it into practice, while for teachers, the compass represents wisdom, knowledge and the responsibility to act righteously.

Another of the Masonic symbols that accompany the well-known references of the order is the letter G, which is usually located in the middle of the square and the compass. The lyrics refer to God as the creator of laws. Together with the compass and the square, the G is the representation of the Three Lights that govern Freemasonry.

Likewise, a symbol that is inevitably linked to Freemasonry is the lodge. This is the place where the meetings of apprentices, peers and teachers are held. Here attendees are accommodated in ascending order according to their level. During the meeting free texts are exposed and debated and at the end a meal is shared where the brothers have more opportunity to fraternize.

Masonic symbols are representations of the dogmas and rites that govern this fraternity. Just as there are some whose meaning is in the public domain, others are reserved only for select members of the Masonic order.
