Mandalas are complex drawings that symbolize the forces that regulate the universe and that are a support tool in meditation. They provide many benefits. They are much more than abstract figures, since they have a spiritual background based on Hinduism and Buddhism.
The word “mandala” is a Sanskrit word meaning “circle” or “wheel”. Depending on their shapes and colors they have a different interpretation. The designs are free, they do not use a certain pattern and the ideal is to start drawing without having an established design, but letting our unconscious be the one that guides the lines.
Its meaning will depend on the shapes and colors. In that sense, the circle means distance, however it also has to do with security, the absolute and the true self. The square is related to balance and stability. The triangle is connected with transformation, vitality and water.
If the spiral form appears, it is related to healing energies. If a cross shape appears in the drawing, it symbolizes decisions and is related to the cardinal points. A heart is related to love, union and happiness.
A mandala in which a star appears is associated with freedom and spirituality; and if it is a pentagon, it shows closeness to the four elements and the human body. For its part, the hexagon means balance and union of opposites, and a butterfly is related to transformation, self-renewal of the soul and death. Also, one of the figures that is most often observed in the mandalas is the labyrinth and it symbolizes self-reflection, the search for the center of oneself and confusion.
On the other hand, colors also have a particular meaning. Black is related to death, depth, sadness, mystery and ignorance. On the contrary, white is the color of perfection, purification and illumination.
The color green relates to hope, nature, growth, happiness and freedom; the blue symbolizes joy, peace, serenity and satisfaction; the gray represents calm, neutrality, expectation, renewal and wisdom.
Red represents passion, vital energy and sensuality; orange symbolizes energy, dynamism, courage, tenderness and ambition; yellow reflects sympathy, light and the color of the sun; and the pink denotes sweetness, patience and altruism.
