conwy castle It is a medieval fortress, located in the City of Wales in the United Kingdom; built by Eduardo I, between the years 1283 and 1289. It is divided into two courtyards, internal and external; enclosed by huge towers that have a height of 21 meters high with nine meters in diameter.
It was built with the purpose of making a wall in the city, to protect it and watch the movements of the enemies. However, after the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1642; it was invaded by troops loyal to Carlos I, until four years later, when they were defeated by the army led by the English «roundheads»; who supported and defended the Parliament of England against the monarchy of the House of Stuart, being at that time partially and intentionally demolished the castle; making it impossible for them to use it in any insurrection.
Reviewing its history a bit, long before the English built the town of Conwy, the castle was occupied by a monastery. It fell into a deplorable state at the beginning of the 17th century, for which Carlos I sold it to Eduardo «Conway» in 1627, for the modest sum of 100 pounds.
In the 19th century, the castle became an irresistible attraction for many painters that reflected in their works all the majesty of the fortress that was about to disappear, for the second half of the same century. A series of restorations were made, due to the seductive charm that it exerted towards the hundreds of visitors who frequented it regularly. In this video from the YouTube channel, Rubén San Román shows the majesty of the Conwy Castle:
Today the castle is a tourist attraction, visited annually by thousands of people; who admire the architecture of its construction. However, the work of keeping it standing is extremely expensive; as requires repairs that annually cost around £30,000.
The location of the castle is on the River Conwy 43 kilometers long, being a control zone between the coastal areas and the northern interior of the city of Wales, linked through the new “New Bridge” bridge; and adapted to the needs of modern urban planning, which the old «Telford» bridge could not cover. Currently, this bridge is congested by the innumerable vehicles that circulate on the road.
The view of the castle from the two bridges is spectacular! Its restorations have been done aesthetically preserving its medieval style, and although the prices to access its facilities are a bit expensive, it is actually worth traveling to the United Kingdom to visit it and enjoy a wonderful view of a unique monument that in 1986, it was declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site; classifying it verbatim «as one of the best examples of late 13th century and early 14th century military architecture in Europe.»
