Nature hides many treasures and one of the most admired by man are diamonds, but among so many that have been extracted, perhaps one of the most fascinating in the world is the golden jubilee. A diamond without equal, which thanks to its 109.134 grams or 545.67 carats, is currently known as the largest cut diamond in the worlda title that took from the famous Cullinan I, who held the record until 1986 for its 530.20 carats or 106,040 grams.
The Golden Jubilee is also the possessor of a beautiful golden brown color resulting from a mixture of shades between yellow and brown, which is why it was initially called «the nameless brown». The original gem had a rough weight of 755 carats and stands out for having been discovered in 1985, in the Premier mine in South Africa.the same mine where the famous Cullinan and Centenary diamonds were mined.
However, despite being a large gem, the Nameless Brown was not perfect. Well, it had among its defects cracks and scratches that greatly hindered the carving processso a painstaking work method was going to be required to ensure integrity and that the end result would be a perfect gem, displaying its true brilliance from any angle.
For this impossible mission, the De Beers group, the company that owned the diamond at the time I would entrust the challenge to one of the best diamond cutters in the world, Gabriel Tolkowsky. Great-nephew of the famous craftsman Marcel Tolkowsky, who was the father of round diamond cutting and the diamond wheel, a tool that is still widely used in gem carving today.
The task would take Gabriel Tolkowsky two long years, in which he tested innovative technologies for cutting and carving gems, in addition to using his skill and talent, until the diamond we know today would finally come to lightthus becoming one of his greatest works and for which the world of jewelry will always recognize him.
In 1995 it was sold by De Beers to a group of Thai businessmen., who in jubilee, sent him for his blessing with the most important religious leaders in the world, including Pope John Paul II, the Supreme Buddhist Patriarch and the Supreme Imam in Thailand. To give it away in 1997 to its current owner, the King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej, on the occasion of his fiftieth year of reign and it would be he who would baptize him with the name of Golden Jubilee.
Although it was intended that the Golden Jubilee would be set in the royal scepter or in the royal seal, these plans did not materialize, so currently displayed as part of the crown jewels at the Royal Palace of Thailand. It is noteworthy that despite being a brown diamond that experts consider to be of inferior quality, due to its characteristics it is estimated that its value is 12 million dollars.
