New symptoms of COVID-19 are being reported all the time.
People using the COVID symptom survey app have reported changes in their voice that affected the sound of their speech.
Data from millions of app partners has shown that a hoarse voice can be a symptom of COVID-19.
According to the team behind the app, a hoarse voice is not a very common symptom of COVID-19; however, during the beginning of the pandemic, many clinical staff reported experiencing a hoarse voice during their illness.
A hoarse voice can sound and feel different from person to person.
For example, your voice may become hoarser, deeper or harsher, quieter or even change pitch.
If you have a hoarse voice, you may feel like it takes more effort to speak.
What causes the symptom?
Researchers from the Symptom Study app explained:
«We know that the COVID-19 virus affects the tissues of our respiratory system, of which the larynx is part. This explains why some people have a hoarse voice during infection.
While not a particularly strong predictor of COVID-19, if you have an unexplained hoarse voice, we think you should get tested just to be sure.»
You should also get tested if you find the following:
- Fever
- Chills or chills
- persistent cough
- Loss or change in smell.
- Loss or change in taste
- Headache
- Throat pain
- Acne
- Covid language.
If you have any of the main symptoms of COVID-19, it is recommended that you get a PCR test (a test that is sent to a laboratory) to check for COVID-19 as soon as possible.
You and anyone you live with should stay home and not have visitors until you get your test result; just leave your house to get tested.
Anyone in your child care or support bubble should also stay home if you have been in close contact with them since your symptoms started or during the 48 hours before they started.
