Virtual meetings: how to avoid work fatigue in telecommuting mode?

Muscle aches, visual exhaustion and headaches are some symptoms of work fatigue that a worker who is working remotely under inappropriate conditions could suffer. In this way, examples of consecutive meetings arise where it is difficult to reconcile efficiency and productivity, how can they be avoided? Horace Llovetco-founder of Nawaiamprovides some recommendations.

“Every day we should define communication routines with the team, setting realistic and achievable goals so as not to discourage us, trying new methods to review results, promoting active breaks to recharge energy, generating wellness programs adapted to this new reality to challenge ourselves and promote professional and personal balance. People who feel more cared for, valued and happy at work are much more committed and productive, because they value every action, every gesture of the leader and his organization ”, recommended Llovet, who develops an application that uses gamification for the selection of job profiles.

A recent study published by Jeremy Bailensondirector of the Stanford Virtual Human Interaction Laboratory, describes what has been called «Zoom fatigue.»

According to the expert, we feel more tired after a videoconference than at the end of a physical interaction of the same duration. The research establishes four possible causes of this exhaustion: seeing the other person in the foreground and too close; seeing oneself on the screen all the time; not being able to move freely so as not to get out of the camera plane and the weight of non-verbal language.

In this regard, Horacio Llovet commented that there are meetings that last hours, and hours that are not very productive, where there are no respites, scheduling call after call, with which “The only thing we are going to encourage is exhaustion, frustration and even anger. We have to be empathetic above all, understanding that teleworking has enormous challenges. Therefore, to avoid fatigue, time must be respected”.

Finally, the specialist specified what are the alert situations that could discourage teleworking, and these are group messages, emails and other types of communication channels that would significantly affect the mental health of the team.

“I always recommend using planning, a word that sometimes scares or sounds complex and boring but that I assure you saves our lives, because it helps us organize ourselves to order, not losing focus on what is urgent and important. We must have a daily schedule, that gives us visibility, allows us to perform better and let’s not forget the details that make the difference. And if unforeseen events arise, we can quickly rethink the calendar and readjust it to give our best vision, really shine without collapsing: planning, patience, perseverance and positive attitude”concluded the specialist.
