In an attempt to soften the impact, health agencies are boosting efforts to raise awareness of the warning signs of cancer.
The symptoms most commonly associated with cancer are unexplained fatigue and drastic changes in body weight.
However, two worrying signs of blood cancer may be evident on the skin.
Blood cancers are the third leading cause of cancer death in the UK and comprise the fifth largest group of the disease.
In fact, official figures suggest that more than 40,000 people will be diagnosed with the disease annually.
Macmillan Cancer Support explains: “Faster-growing leukemia, such as acute myeloid leukemia or acute lymphoblastic leukemia, are more likely to cause symptoms that appear within a few weeks.»
«People often get sick pretty quickly.»
“Most of the symptoms of acute leukemia are caused by leukemia cells filling the bone marrow. This means that healthy blood cells do not pass into the blood normally.
The signs that the blood is a disease can manifest itself in many ways.
The most common ones usually include drastic changes in weight, along with swollen lymph nodes or an enlarged liver.
Recurrent nosebleeds can occur as cells in the bone marrow prevent the production of blood-clotting cells.
But it has also been reported bruises and rashes in connection with blood cancer.
The health agency Blood Cancer explains: “The bruises they usually start as red spots that change color and darken over time.
They often feel like something soft. A black and brown skin, bruises may be difficult to see initially, but as they develop they appear darker than the surrounding skin.
The rashes often appear as groups of small dots or larger spots. On black and brown skin, they can appear purple or darker than the surrounding skin.
On lighter skin, they usually look red or purple. If you press on them, the petechiae and purple color don’t go away.
«Most people who have the symptoms described [aquí] they won’t have blood cancer.»
Cancer symptoms are often poorly defined, and a host of body changes end up being a reflection of other, non-cancerous conditions.
«But it’s worrying to have symptoms you can’t explain, and it’s important to find out what’s causing them, if only to put your mind at ease.» Blood Cancer.
How to prevent blood cancer
Like most forms of cancer, blood cancers reflect DNA changes inside blood cellsleading to abnormal behavior.
Factors that affect a person’s risk of developing the disease may include exposure to chemicals or radiation, but a large number of cancers are due to ethnicity, gender, and age.
However, unlike other types of malignancy, lifestyle changes, such as diet, have little effect on the risk of developing blood cancers.
However, regular exercise and a good diet can go a long way in preventing other forms of cancer.
