What place does pleasure occupy in the lives of Chileans and how do they experience sexuality?was what the store inquired Japi Jane beside Criteria Research in Pleasure Nation, the First Survey on Sexual Pleasure in Chile. The study was carried out on a thousand people between the ages of 18 and 80, throughout the country, with different marital statuses: single, married, and couples indoors and outdoors.
“I am constantly asked if Chilean men and women are connected to their own pleasure and the truth is that, according to what I have seen in Japi Jane, that although today we are at a more advanced moment of knowledge of sexual enjoyment, we still have a long way to go. That is why we wanted to put all this in concrete and for the people themselves to answer this question”comment Jane Morganfounder and owner of the Japi Jane store.
According to the survey, only 11% of the people surveyed declare that sex is one of the activities that generates the most pleasure, being a more recurrent response in the south of the country (13%) over the north (8%) or the Metropolitan region (12%). The enjoyment of people in Chile would focus first on food and drink and, secondly, on rest, travel or vacations, and family life.
The main reason that inhibits sexual pleasure in people under 40 years of age, as stated by them, is lack of time or excessive responsibilities, while in those over 60 there is routine and the use of medications. As for women, 23% answered that one of the great inhibitors of their pleasure was having a bad self-image of their body.
It stands out that the main reason for people to have sexual encounters is mutual pleasure (81%) and, secondly, the intention of keeping the partner satisfied and taking care of the relationship. On the other hand, it is women who say they feel more motivated to achieve their own pleasure than men when it comes to having a sexual encounter. When asked what things give them the most pleasure in sexual encounters in company, 22% indicated knowing that the other is enjoying it.
The analysis by age revealed that young people are the least concerned about the connection as a couple or about feeling loved in sexual encounters, while they are the ones who are most concerned about attraction and physical contact. Meanwhile, those over 60 mentioned that What was most pleasant for them was knowing that they were giving pleasure, caresses, kisses and feeling loved.
14% with more pleasurable sexual encounters
Regarding sexual encounters, the survey identified that there is 14% of people who declare to have pleasurable sex frequently, while the remaining 86% do so to a lesser extent, where some enjoy it, but do it less frequently and others declare not consider their encounters pleasant.
This 14%, in turn, is made up mostly of women, people between 40 and 59 years old, and people with intimate partners. Similarly, within this group, 56% are people who say they regularly or occasionally enjoy masturbation and 50% say they do use sexshop products with some frequency. Regarding the latter, the products preferred by this group are lubricants, erotic cosmetics and lingerie, in addition to vibrators and toys.
Self-knowledge, play and exploration
Regarding masturbation, 73% of those surveyed indicated that self-pleasure is their predominant motivation. However, the people surveyed indicated that they also masturbate for other reasons more functional to health, that is, seeking stress relief, falling asleep or maintaining mental or physical health.
The survey also inquired into the use of sex toys and revealed that they are an acquired taste. Matías Chaparro, General Manager of Criteria, explains that «they provide sexual pleasure to a greater extent to those who regularly use them.»
39% of the people surveyed use sex toys occasionally and its use is higher among people of intermediate ages. Those under 40 years of age, who have not tried them, show greater interest in doing so.
“The experience of using a toy as a couple does not mean a change or a replacement to any of the practices that already occur, but rather it increases and, above all, diversifies the sensations in pursuit of pleasure. Also, it is very important to emphasize that no toy has magical effects immediately. Every toy requires time for self-knowledge, exploration and sometimes patience” explains Jane Morgan.
