The supply of food available on the market that helps animals in their different needs is increasingly varied. In the case of obesity, a nutritious meal is essential, but without ingredients that can affect the physical condition of our pet.
Fernando Montoyaveterinarian and commercial analyst of Puppies & Kittens, explains that “providing our pet with good food means worrying today about how we want them to be tomorrow. It is vitally important that the food is nutritious, that it protects them from future diseases, especially in those breeds or species (dogs or cats) that tend to generate repetitive pathologies”.

For the same reason, the expert assures that it is relevant that people look at the labels and look for ingredients that favor the digestibility of the food, since especially in popular brand products, the percentage of fiber and protein is low, so they do not absorb nutrients. “It is important to keep in mind that dogs and cats are carnivorous mammals, so their food must be selected within those parameters”, clarifies Montoya.
A food that is inappropriate for our pet can lead to diseases or conditions such as a tendency to obesity, nutritional disorders, urinary problems, shaggy fur, poor digestibility or even soft stools.
That is the question many owners ask themselves when wanting to offer better nutrition. In this regard, Puppies & Kittens explains that the unique needs of the pet must be considered, that is, the weight, but also the physical activity that it performs. Another essential point is the breed or size, and age.
Throughout the life of domestic animals, at least three food changes must be made: at the time of weaning from the mother, when they are puppies; then when they become adults and finally when they become senior pets.
“The most important thing about having transition foods in life stages is because the percentage of protein in foods decreases as age increases.. This is due to the fact that pups need more protein to promote growth and, therefore, they have a greater demand for energy and nutrients to meet their needs”, explains Montoya.
Finally, it is important to consider the size of our pet. The difference in food for small, medium and large breeds is mainly characterized by the size of the croquette, which is fundamental in the mechanics of chewing since, through friction and interaction with the teeth, it helps to remove dental tartar and to initiate digestive metabolism.
