Did you know that the seasonal dates of the zodiac signs are not always the same? You may have noticed that dates vary from magazine to magazine, and there’s a good reason for that. In astrology, the sky is imagined as a 360 degree circle.

As we were all taught in school, the Earth orbits the Sun once a year.

However, the Earth takes about 365.25 days to complete one orbit.

This extra quarter day is why we get an extra day in the year every four years: a leap year.

Leap years are added to the annual calendar on February 29 once every four years.

It was a leap year in 2020, so there was an extra day in the year compared to 2021 and the dates of the zodiac signs were slightly different.

Zodiac sign dates are calculated from the first day of the Aries season, which is the spring equinox.

The spring equinox, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, is a fixed moment in time each year when the Sun crosses the path of the equator and is positioned exactly on the equator between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Due to leap year, this happens on a slightly different date from year to year.

This is why the Aries season sometimes starts on March 21 instead of March 20, which also pushes back some of the zodiac sign’s dates.

The next leap year isn’t until 2024, so we continue with the regular zodiac sign dates for 2022.

If you were born on the last date of the season for a zodiac sign, this can be quite confusing.

It may seem that some years you are Virgo and others Leo, for example, but it is not.

The Sun is in one sign or the other, it can’t straddle two at once and you can’t be ‘on the cusp’ of two signs.

If you’re not sure of your star sign, read your birth chart or check the ephemeris of your birth year to find out where the Sun was at your time of birth.
