Antivirus program that is running on a computer. An active antivirus does not necessarily have to be in the process of scanning the system, nor does it have to be in the permanent protection state (although the latter is recommended for active antivirus).
Contrasts with passive or inactive antivirus, which is when the antivirus is installed but not running, let alone permanent protection.
In general, on a computer there should not be two antiviruses active at the same time, because they can cause conflicts or, worse still, cancel the protection. It is possible to have an active antivirus and several inactive ones.
Inactive antivirus might be run manually only in certain situations, for example, active antivirus fails to remove a particular malware and another antivirus might.
