Definition of System Unit (computer)

In computing, the unit of systems can be:

• 1 • System unit or also called central system unit. Conceptually, the system unit is made up of the CPU and main memory of a computer.

The CPU in turn is divided into the Control Unit and the ALU.

Some bibliographies include under the concept of «system unit» the ports, the secondary memory and the expansion cards. Since this is merely a conceptual division, its boundaries are not of much importance other than for educational purposes.

• 2 • By extension, some call a computer cabinet a system unit. That is, the box, case, tower, box or casing that contains the motherboard, CPU, memories, expansion cards, power supply and internal storage units in a computer.
