Tyra Banks criticizes the fashion industry

The model, presenter of the show America’s Next Top Modelwrote some harsh words against the world of modeling on his Instagram account.

We women criticize models a lot for representing an unhealthy ideal of beauty, however, sometimes we forget that they are only the visible head of an industry for which they are nothing more than puppets that they discard when they get fat or old.

Supermodel Tyra Banks has made us aware of this problem with a long speech that she published on her Instagram account, in which compares the situation of today’s models compared to what she experienced during her years on the catwalks.

Today they have to arrive backstage at fashion shows dressed as if they were already on the catwalk. They have to compete with actresses, artists and stars for magazine covers and advertising campaigns. They have to have a lot of followers on social media to book the best first-class jobs… Me, backstage at fashion shows, I looked like this photo…

Models have so much pressure today. They have to look good on AND off the set. They have to arrive backstage at fashion shows looking and dressed as if they are already ON a runway. They have to be slimmer than slim. Skinnier than skinny. They have to compete with actresses, recording artists and reality stars for magazine covers and ad campaigns. They have to have tons of followers on social media to book top notch jobs. And they have to do selfies that make them look relatable, but not TOO relatable, because then people may comment that they don’t understand, “Why the heck is THAT girl a friggin’ model??!!!!” When I was a young model, yeah, we had to think about our weight, but not like today. I think I was size 6, not a size 0. And backstage at fashion shows, I looked like this photo you’re looking at. Yep, that’s teenaged me right before a YSL show was about to start in sneakers, plaid flannel and bad jeans. Mr. Yves Saint Laurent could care how I looked when I arrived to his show from him. But when I hit his stage of him, I expected excellence. And I made sure I delivered that every time I was chosen to walk his amazing runway from him. I’m sending love and hugs to all working, aspiring and super models worldwide. You all have lots to live up to. And I’m here cheering for you every single day. Stay strong girls. #throwbackthursday #throwbackTyTy

She was referencing the previous image, which she uploaded with her comment, in which a teenage Tyra Banks, in a T-shirt, sweatshirt and tennis shoes, is seen backstage at an Yves Saint Laurent catwalk. He also had some harsh words about the weight and size of today’s models

They have to be thinner than sparse. skinnier than skinny. When I was a young model, yes, we had to think about our weight, but not like today. I think I was a size 6, not a size 0.

And these are the words of a supermodel with almost 25 years of career. What do you think? Write us what you think in the comments of this note…
