Do you remember the phrase «The letter with blood enters», well not today, obviously in the 21st century some punishments are not so evident, however they still exist and one of us also suffered them.
How efficient are punishments? It is clear that teachers are very important in our society, but for the management and teaching of today’s young people, other mechanisms should be sought.
Thanks to technology, modern youth have radically changed their way of learning. Accustomed to receiving information quickly, teachers seem obsolete as they try to teach an awake youngster stimulated by video games, videos and social networks.
These are the most common, which one do you remember the most?
7.- Isolation
This is the most popular punishment on the planet, and it has been practiced since time immemorial. If you were safe, you had to go through this. Many teachers tend to isolate students who are not paying attention, are upset, or have a problem learning.
Some teachers isolate children by sending them to the corner with their foreheads against the wall. In Japan they do the same, but they bring the children to their knees. In USA schools have a special room called detention which is only used to send badly behaved kids who have been isolated there.
6.- Humiliation
Unfortunately, there are still hundreds of thousands of teachers in the world who think that humiliation is a very effective punishment to convert the rebellion of students, but it has been shown that this thought is a big lie. Contrary to what some teachers think, humiliation generates resentment, misunderstanding and isolation. A single humiliation can traumatize a child for life.
In Japan, humiliation is part of daily education, for example: when a student fails in a job, he is punished by smelling the armpits of his classmates in front of the whole class.
In some places in Mexico, when the student fails, their grades are displayed so that everyone can see their poor performance. Another very common punishment is the old donkey ears. Without a doubt, one of the most humiliating practices that exist.
5.- Physical punishment
Believe it or not, there are still schools that allow teachers to physically punish students. From hitting the hands with the ruler, to pulling the ear, in other countries more severe punishments are used, for example: the skull squeeze, which consists of taking the young man’s skull with both hands, pressing the head causing pain quite uncomfortable.
In India, there is a punishment that will seem most inhumane. At the end of the school week, teachers choose the worst behaved students to receive their lesson. All the boys are lying on the floor, with their hands outstretched forming a path on which the teacher will pass on top of a bicycle. Can you believe it? This practice is still very popular, especially in the rural outskirts of this beautiful country.
Each country has its own traditional punishments. For example: in some schools in Japan, girls who are caught in contact with a man are forced to stand in front of the entire school, with their panties below mid-knee. All this with the intention of humiliating.
Another very common physical punishment in some Mexican schools is beatings with the ruler. Surely one of your parents remembers having suffered from this, as it was very common a few years ago.
Fortunately, some activists have fought to prevent violence from being used in schools as a method of academic training, since it only generates resentment and insecurity. Currently, if you suffer from any physical abuse by your teachers, do not forget to tell whoever you trust the most, preferably an adult so that he or she can accompany you to file a complaint with the Secretary of Education of your State.
4.- The suspension
It has been shown that this is the least efficient method to correct a person’s bad behavior, and unfortunately it is one of the most used academic punishments, especially when it comes to physical behavior.
The suspension only causes a deep disinterest in the students, and as if that were not enough, it takes them out of rhythm, increasing the chances that they will get failing grades, since their absences make them miss many important subjects.
3.- Extra task
Many teachers avoid all of the punishments that we already mentioned, and instead decide to punish by increasing the amount of homework that young person must turn in.
Unfortunately, it is impossible for this type of punishment to be effective in improving behavior, since it only causes tremendous boredom and hatred for studying. What matters is learning to arouse the curiosity of the child or adolescent, not letting their boredom with the task ruin their desire to study in the future.
2.- Talk to parents
Without a doubt, this point is super important, since it is necessary that there is good communication between parents and teachers. Unfortunately, most teachers only communicate with the child’s parents when there is a problem. This is very bad, because not only does it frustrate the student, but it breaks communication with their own parents, seeing how they take the place of the teacher who is passing on the week’s complaints.
A teacher has the responsibility to always be affectionate, seeking to create a bond between parents, student and teacher, trying to create good communication based on trust and respect. This will cause both the student and her parents to feel part of a team, this will result in a lot of self-esteem and a desire to excel in the student. Isn’t that what we are all looking for?
1.- The expulsion
Undoubtedly, expulsion is the worst of all behavioral correction measures used in schools. Isn’t it stupid to want to make a young person learn to study or behave by taking him out of school? This is one of those punishments that we can never understand, because it is simply contradictory. This point reflects the profound educational crisis we are experiencing. After all, ¨La Mars¨ was not so wrong, this is indeed a retrograde system, and until the new generations of teachers understand that it is time to change the old corrective methods, the students will continue not to love school and not take advantage of it. make the most of all the beautiful things and important values that academic education has to offer us.
Only through joint work will we be able to build a better education for future generations. Let’s use technology to make this dream come true.
