Ned Flanders Bridge, from The Simpsons, in Portland: Homage?

In the city of Portland they decided to baptize a ned flanders bridgelike the character in the animated series The Simpson, and it’s not a joke. We tell you the story, which comes with a commemorative plaque and everything!

The Simpsons is one of the most successful and popular animated series in the world. Its characters have accompanied us throughout 33 seasons (at the time of publication of this note -2021-) and some of them, despite not belonging to the family that gives the series its name, earned a space in popular culture. That is the case of Ned Flanders, Homer’s religious neighbor.

And it is that the Transport Office of the hometown of the creator of this cartoon (Portland, Oregon, USA), published a post on its official Facebook account informing its inhabitants of the baptism of a bridge in honor to the exemplary neighbor, who already has tennis shoes with his image, but that’s another story.

This is the Ned Flanders Bridge in Portland

It is a pedestrian and bicycle bridge that connects two traditional Portland neighborhoods (the Pearl and Northwest districts) and was named after Flanders, one of the area’s historic surnames; now, the construction was renamed as a tribute to the character, the creator and the neighborhood.

“Ned Flanders, a beloved cartoon character in modern cultural history and created by Portland native and Lincoln High graduate Matt Groening, has appeared on the groundbreaking television show The Simpsons since its premiere and is named after NW Flanders Street in Portland, Oregon.

Ned Flanders was and is a quintessential good neighbor for over 30 years, keeping his cool and going out of his way to be a good neighbor even when up against his rather tough neighbors, the Simpsons.

At a time when people seem more politically or culturally divided than ever, and less willing to talk to their neighbors with whom they may disagree, we think Ned Flanders is symbolic of the kind of connection between neighbors. we must fight for in Portland.”

He explains the text in the post, accompanied by a couple of images in which some officials from the Mayor’s Office appear and a close-up of the commemorative plaque.
