«The Incredibles 2», «Voices from Beyond» and more premieres

A returning family of incredible superheroes, a housemaid posing as a high society lady, an autistic girl who is a fan of Star Trek and a creature that imitates human voices to catch its victims, are the protagonists of the premieres for this week.

The Incredibles 2 (Incredibles 2) (2018)

• What is it about?: The lovable Parr family returns to the big screen with a sequel that accomplishes something truly incredible: matching its predecessor. With a retro vibe drawn from 1960s film and television (including a tribute to the animated series Jonny Quest), the new film from the Incredibles It starts immediately from the previous film (as if fourteen years had not passed between the two films) and shows us how superheroes continue to be illegal in a world in which the damage that a superheroic act can cause is recognized. The melodramatic teenager Violet, the hyperactive pre-teen Dash, the cute and, at the same time, dangerous baby Jack-Jack, as well as the «cool» Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson) and the eccentric dressmaker Edna Mode, are an essential part of Incredibles 2. But they are joined by two interesting new characters: Winston and Evelyn Deavor, the directors of a successful telecommunications company who seek to support superheroes and give them everything they need to fulfill their mission. The Deavor brothers place Elastigirl (the hip family mother), as the center of the superhero family. She’s set to star in some impressive chase sequences, while her husband, Mr. Incredible, stays home changing diapers, cooking dinner, and trying to bond with his teenage daughter.
• Why worth watching? Marvel and DC fans must accept that The Incrediblesthe animated film from Pixar studios released in 2004, is perhaps the best superhero movie in history (with the forgiveness of Dark Knight Y Captain America: Civil War). The tremendous action sequences, the sociopolitical reading that underlies Brad Bird’s script and the use of the superhero team as a metaphor for dysfunctional family dynamics make The Incredibles the best version of Fantastic Four that has been made to date (it is a pity that it is not an official version). Incredibles 2 It is full of spoilers that are better not revealed, but its true value lies in the powerful messages it conveys thanks to its great power as an entertainment film. Paradoxically, this sequel is one of the most critical films about the superhero phenomenon and one of the best in the genre.
• Points against: Incredibles 2 It suffers from the problems inherent in sequels: the magic of discovery gives way to well-known characters that take away the experience of surprise and amazement from the original film.
• Fun facts: As is customary with Pixar movies, Incredibles 2 includes a gorgeous animated short called Bao, which features a quirky story about an overprotective mother and her «son.» The character of Edna Mode is based on the eccentric dressmaker Edna Mode on the legendary costume designer Edith Head and includes the voice of director Brad Bird.

madam (2017)

• What is it about?: The French novelist, playwright and director Amanda Sthers gives us a painting of customs entitled madam, starring the Spanish Rossy De Palma (Pedro Almodóvar’s favorite actress), along with Toni Collette and Harvey Keitel. We are told a story that goes something like this: Anne is the careerist second wife of Bob, a debt-ridden art collector. Anne is faced with having a dinner party with 13 guests due to a surprise visit from her stepson Steven, a free-spirited but creatively blocked young writer. As the number 13 is unlucky, Anna asks her maid, the Spanish immigrant María, to pose as a lady of the Spanish aristocracy so that she can have 14 guests at the table. Maria reluctantly agrees, but ends up accepting. At dinner, Maria becomes the center of attraction thanks to her charisma, making David, an art dealer, fall madly in love with her. And that’s where the mess begins.
• Why worth watching? Thanks to the imposing presence and talent of Rossy De Palma, the acid and cynical interpretation of Toni Collette and the charisma of Michael Smiley and Tom Hughes, the film manages to captivate the viewer to become a kind of cinematic delight that talks about the hypocrisy and loneliness of the upper class, combined with a life of luxury and waste, contrasting with sincerity and the strong bonds of love and friendship that those who cannot afford the luxuries they deserve possess.
• Points against: Yes madam Had it been set in Victorian times, it would have worked much better. But, even so, it is pleasant and refreshing to find a film of this style, since they are on the verge of extinction.
• Fun facts: The Australian actress Toni Collette is the protagonist of three films that are currently in theaters: hereditary, please standby Y madam.

A new way (please standby) (2018)

• What is it about?: Dakota Fanning does a wonderful job playing Wendy, an autistic woman who is a fan of the TV series. Star Trekwho works in Cinnabon, who lives in a center for special people led by psychologist and mother Scottie (Toni Collette) and whose only relative is her older sister Audrey (Alice Eve, who curiously acted in Star Trek: Into Darkness). When Wendy finds out about a contest sponsored by Paramount studios to write a script for the latest movie from star trek, fills himself with courage and writes a script of more than 500 pages. Seeing that no one takes her seriously, Wendy decides to run away from downtown and cross half the country to deliver the script directly to the studios. Yes gentlemen, it is a drama of overcoming, a road movie and a mandatory film for fans of star trek.
• Why worth watching? Though please standby It can be thought of as a drama, it is full of funny moments, references that will delight the Trekkies and Patton Oswald playing a policeman who manages to convince Wendy to go with him thanks to his peculiar linguistic skills. This is a small and unassuming movie, but one that manages to touch the hearts of fans of Kirk and Spock’s journeys, as well as those who confuse star trek with starwars (an unforgivable mistake, yes).
• Points against: The plot is somewhat predictable and the situations presented are best enjoyed if you are a Star Trek fan.
• Fun facts: Although Paramount has never held a script contest for the films of star trekas stated in this film, the producers of the series Deep Space Nine Y Voyager (series based on the famous franchise), they invited amateur writers to submit their scripts and in fact chapters were made based on them. Voices from beyond (Jang-San Beom) (2017)

• What is it about?: From Korea comes this chilling horror film that tells us how a creature called the Jangsan Tiger lives near Mount Jang, which imitates human voices in order to catch and devour its victims. A mother loses her son and when looking for him she finds a mysterious girl. The woman soon discovers that the young woman is not what she seems and that the creature is closer than she thinks.
• Why worth watching? The film includes some really scary moments and subtext about how mothers will do anything to help their children.
• Points against: The performances are uneven and some characters are not well defined. It is a pity that the film is not shown in any movie theater in its original language, which reduces its impact.
• Fun facts: This movie is based on a Korean legend. Its director Jung-Huh, obtained a great commercial success in his country with this film and with the action and suspense film Hide And Seek.
