Do you really want to use a harness when walking your dog because you want to reduce the pressure on your cervical spine and back? But your four-legged friend doesn’t like the classic dog harnesses with a belt between the front legs?
Then a Norwegian harness is just right for you! This type of dog harness does not have a strap between the front legs and is therefore also suitable for sensitive dogs that otherwise feel restricted.
In this article I will introduce you to the five best Norwegian harnesses and go into the advantages and disadvantages of each. I’ll also tell you what you have to pay particular attention to when buying so that you don’t get annoyed later.
Product test: Norwegian crockery
Hunter neoprene dog harness
The first product in my test is a Norwegian harness made of nylon and neoprene from Hunter. The straps are made of nylon, which gives them a special robustness and durability. So that the coarse nylon material does not chafe, the harness is padded with neoprene on the inside. This selection of materials also makes the crockery very easy to care for.
There are two click fasteners on the waist belt so that you can optimally adapt the Norwegian harness to your four-legged friend. The underbust bar can be individually adjusted with a kind of slider.
For night walks, the manufacturer has incorporated a special 3M Scotchlite Reflective Material that reflects light. So you can be sure that your four-legged friend can also be seen in the dark.
EzyDog Norwegian harness
The Norwegian harness from the company EzyDog is characterized by a high level of comfort. The straps are generously adjustable so that you can adapt the harness perfectly to your four-legged friend. Inside the harness is padded with neoprene.
It is very easy to put on and take off. After you have pulled the harness over your four-legged friend’s head, all you have to do is close the clip fastener. The closure is made of non-rusting, robust materials so that you can use this product for a long time.
The attachment ring for the leash is located on the back and is movable. In this way, the ring always adapts itself to the guiding position.
The dog harness has reflective strips woven into it so that you can walk safely with your darling even in the dark.
Happilax Norwegian tableware
This padded dog harness is lined with fleece on the inside. This is particularly gentle on the fur, chafing is definitely a thing of the past with this harness. In summer, however, it can get too warm in the fleece-covered areas if the dog moves a lot.
Like all Norwegian harnesses, this product has no bridge between the front legs and offers your four-legged friend more freedom of movement than classic dog harnesses.
Putting on and taking off a Norwegian harness is also particularly easy. All you have to do is pull the harness over your head and fasten it with the straps on your stomach. Then you adjust the straps individually for your dog and the harness is ready for use.
For walks at dusk or in the dark, the harness is equipped with reflectors so that your dog is always safe.
ThinkPet No Pull Harness Breathable Sports Harness
This Norwegian harness has both a back ring and a breast ring. This allows you to decide individually where you want to hang the line. The classic variant on the back is the most trouble-free, as the dog cannot get tangled in the leash with its front legs. If you lead your four-legged friend by the chest ring, you have more control. Therefore, this type of leash attachment is particularly recommended for dogs that pull hard.
Getting in and out of the harness is very easy. All you have to do is pull the harness over your dog’s head and attach it to the waist belt with a buckle. You can then adjust both the abdominal and chest straps individually and thus optimally adapt them to your darling.
The breathable, padded nylon material ensures a comfortable fit with maximum resilience. The harness also has a handle on the back for more control. The reflective straps offer maximum safety for night trips.
Nobby NORWEGIAN Harness Classic Preno
For less than 10 euros you can buy the Norwegian tableware from the company Nobby. This is available in nine different colors and eleven different sizes, so there will definitely be the right one for your taste as well as for the body shape of your dog.
The neck, shoulder and chest area of the harness is generously padded with neoprene. This material is water-repellent, but may not be breathable enough in summer if you do a lot of sport with your dog.
Putting on the product is very quick and easy. Simply pull the harness over your head and adjust it to your dog using the infinitely adjustable waist straps and you’re ready to go.
A handle on the back of the harness allows you to lift your four-legged friend over obstacles or to better control and guide him in critical situations.
Purchase advice: Norwegian crockery or normal crockery
What is Norwegian tableware and what is it used for?
A classic dog harness has a torso strap and a strap that runs between the front legs and is connected to the torso strap over the shoulders or by an extra connecting strap.
Some dogs find it difficult to move normally with the harness between their front legs. Some four-legged friends feel restricted, try to avoid the belts or don’t want to start walking at all.
If your dog has a problem with a classic harness, you don’t necessarily have to resort to a pure collar, which is known to have some disadvantages – such as too much strain on the neck and back. There are other alternatives.
One possibility is a so-called Norwegian tableware. This consists of a waist strap and a chest strap, which is only connected to the waist strap over the back and not through the front legs. The advantage of this harness is that it doesn’t get in the way between the front legs, but still has the advantages of a classic harness.
Putting on a Norwegian harness is surprisingly quick and easy. This is very important to me, especially with fidgety dogs that cannot stand still for long. With the Norwegian harness you only have to pull the chest strap over your head and then close the torso strap with a buckle. Then your four-legged friend is ready to go without you having to spend ages getting dressed.
The Norwegian harness is a very good alternative for sensitive dogs.
What are the advantages of a Norwegian harness?
As already mentioned, putting on and taking off such a harness is not a problem. Just pull it over your head and fasten the buckle and you’re done.
Since there is no belt between the front legs, the four-legged friends have more freedom of movement and do not feel restricted. A Norwegian harness is also the right choice for injuries in the chest area, as it does not rest on the affected areas and therefore cannot rub or press.
If your four-legged friend pulls on the leash – and this also happens with well-behaved dogs – the pressure is diverted to the stable chest region. The cervical spine and the back are spared, so you can prevent overloading these sensitive parts of the body.
If your dog often pulls on the leash, it can be very dangerous. Especially on the road or with belligerent dogs in the park, it is important that you remain in control. I recommend an anti-train harness for this.
Some models have an additional loop on the back that gives you more control in tricky situations. If necessary, you can also pick up your dog by the handle and carry it a bit. However, this should not become a habit due to the unfavorable distribution of pressure when wearing it.
There are also harnesses that are specially designed to be worn by dogs. A dog harness offers many uses. They are often used for old or sick dogs and in rehabilitation because they do not overload the four-legged friends.
To ensure the safety of your darling, most Norwegian harnesses are equipped with reflective materials.
What are the disadvantages of Norwegian tableware?
Where there are advantages, there must also be disadvantages. This is also the case with Norwegian harnesses.
On the one hand, the missing strap between the front legs makes it easier for your dog to free himself from the harness. While some dogs are true escape artists, others don’t even try. Ultimately, this is simply an experience that should be done in a safe environment if possible. It is best to try out the harness in a fenced area first so that your dog – should it wriggle out of the harness – cannot run away uncontrollably.
Most Norwegian harnesses are…
