15 simple ways to reduce pollution (and prevent environmental contingency)

In recent days, pollution levels in Mexico City have exceeded the limits of the air quality index. This causes an imminent danger to the health of the inhabitants, since the fog that invades the city has toxic components that have a negative impact on the body.

Faced with the health emergency, the authorities have decided to take short-term measures to combat this environmental crisis; for example, providing free service throughout the metro network, encouraging the use of bicycles, public transport or walking, etc.

However, there are certain actions that one can carry out on a daily basis and spread them by word of mouth. For this reason, we share the following simple ways to reduce pollution according to the Green Plan of the Government of Mexico City:

  • Tune up and maintain cars.
  • Avoid burning garbage and tires, as well as using artificial rockets.
  • Avoid buying disposable items and plastics that are not biodegradable.
  • Recycle the trash.
  • Do not throw garbage in the street, forests and parks, and wrap it or cover it well at home.
  • Use pesticides rationally.
  • Avoid tobacco use.
  • Take care of the forests: do not cause fires or destroy the green areas of the city.
  • Postpone gardening tasks that require the use of gas-powered tools on days with high ozone levels.
  • Eat organic foods, or at least those that have not been subjected to such intensive use of agrochemicals (you can grow them on your roof with compost made by you).
  • Limit dry cleaning.
  • Avoid the use of paints, oils and solvents on days of high ozone concentration.
  • Reduces electricity consumption, which will help reduce emissions of pollutants and particles.
  • Light the charcoal with an electric lighter, rather than liquid fuel.
  • Apply the power of the three R’s: reduce-reuse-recycle. Lower consumption will result in less air pollution of all kinds.
