14 proposals to improve air quality in CDMX

The fresh air in CDMX It’s not something common and it’s very close to a kind of fantasy. Citizens are immersed in an urban ecosystem with poor air quality that snatches away the possibility of good respiratory health. However, not everything is bad, as there are some alternatives to improve the air.

Around 17,000 Mexicans lose their lives each year indirectly due to poor air quality. And it is nothing new that we now receive notifications on our smartphone about the risk for “sensitive groups” due to contamination. At first this didn’t seem important to us, but poor air quality is equivalent to inadvertently smoking 40 cigarettes a day. Despite the fact that sustainable mobility programs have increased, the change in our environmental paradigm demands more than that.

Now him government announced several measures that will be launched to have greater control over emissions not only in the use of cars, but in all areas that encompass the mobility industry.

These provisions contemplate a better implementation of an urban routine that seeks to offer better transportation and roads to avoid environmental contingencies. However, this is a collective work that can start with the leaders and continue with us.

Measures to improve air quality:

  • Reduction of emissions in the industry in the distribution of LP gas
  • Reduction of volatile organic compounds in coatings and products for domestic use.
  • Inspection and strategic surveillance to control emissions at gas stations.
  • Distribution of less volatile gasolines in the Megalopolis.
  • Best practices for fire management and fire prevention.
  • Control of emissions and use of clean fuels in the industrial sector.
  • Reduction of emissions for urban maintenance.
  • Organization of the circulation of cargo transport and detection of ostensibly polluting vehicles.
  • Vehicle emission standards.
  • Regulation of new motorcycle emissions.
  • Implementation of a new scheme for the granting of vehicle verification holograms.
  • Promotion of sustainable mobility.
  • Increased capacity of sustainable public transport.
  • Technological development to improve air quality.
  • We must all demand the government measures to protect the environment, not only by implementing better mobility options, but also through the care and conservation of urban green areas. This is not an issue that can be negotiated, the authorities must guarantee fresh air to society. It is true that this is everyone’s job, but we must begin to press for real and fair changes in the face of the problem we face.

Clean air is a right and poor air quality is not something we have to get used to. Breathing well and avoiding diseases that lead to death should not be a daily struggle; therefore, using our political voice to demand something basic is paramount.
