Dogs have all kinds of muzzles – thick or thin, short, long or extremely long. But which breeds have the longest snouts?
You can find our 12 record holders and favorites in this post.
All 12 dogs with a long muzzle at a glance
The most important feature of a dog is its muzzle. With it, he perceives the most diverse smells about 60 times better than we do from his environment.
However, the length of the snout does not necessarily have anything to do with a particularly developed sense of smell. There are real sniffing experts, both with long and short snouts.
So look forward to an overview of our long noses.
1. Borzoi
The borzoi originally comes from Russia and also belongs to the genus of greyhounds. Due to its speed, it was popular as a hunting dog and is now a popular family dog.
Of all dog breeds, the borzoi clearly has the longest snout. In the Guinness Book of Records, a borzoi named “Eris” is noted, which reached an impressive 31 centimeters snout length.
Borzoi are considered sociable, friendly and calm and are easily trainable and educable.
Bizarre: Borzois tend to whine after singing. Pink Floyd took this as an opportunity to record a song together with the musical four-legged friends.
2. Doberman
The Doberman is known to most of us as a fearless, loyal, and alert dog. It found its origin in Germany and got its name from its breeder of the same name.
Ears and tails are often considered a weak point in guard dogs and are therefore usually docked. But that’s how we know him: long snout, pointed ears and a steely look.
Dobermans, the number one bodyguards among dogs, have a weakness – they freeze. Since the well-trained animals have hardly any body fat, it is difficult for them to keep warm on cold days.
3. Saluki
The Saluki is one of the record holders in several categories. Not only is it one of the oldest dog breeds in the world, it is also one of the fastest. It effortlessly reaches up to 68 kilometers per hour.
The Saluki is very enduring and can jump very high. Jumps of up to two meters in height were measured here, which was fatal for some birds.
Of course, the extremely intelligent dog also has a very long snout, which helps it to another record category and thus ends up in this article.
4. Greyhound
Originally from Great Britain, the Greyhound is the fastest dog in the world. At around 70 kilometers per hour, it is just as fast as a professional racehorse or you driving a car on the country road.
The greyhound knows he is fast. That’s why he likes to lie around all day long. This has already earned him the name «couch potato».
In addition, the greyhound can be described as very calm, gentle and trusting.
5. Dachshund
Dachshunds are also often referred to as dachshunds. These are available in two different sizes. Miniature dachshunds only weigh up to five kilograms, while the standard size weighs up to 15 kilograms.
As the name suggests, dachshunds were bred to hunt badgers, but also foxes and rabbits. A long snout is very helpful for penetrating the burrow of the prey.
Dachshunds are very popular as family dogs in apartments because of their size and ease of care. Their shortcoming, however, is that they like to bark a lot and like to dig.
6. Afghan Hound
While most greyhounds have a very short coat, the Afghan Hound stands out with its long hair. Nevertheless, these animals can reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour.
This breed is highly valued and sought after as a family dog. The dogs are affectionate, cheerful and playful. However, due to the length of their coat, Afghan Hounds require a lot of grooming.
7. German shepherd
There is not much to write about the German shepherd. Everyone knows him, almost everyone loves him. After the Labrador Retriever, the German Shepherd is the most popular dog breed in the world.
The German Shepherd is equally obedient and intelligent and a real all-rounder, whether as a guard dog, police dog, herding dog or family dog. The shepherd dog is also ideal for sensitive tasks such as a guide dog, therapy dog or sniffer dog.
What you may not know: Of all dog breeds, the German Shepherd is by far the most affected by pituitary dwarfism. With this disease, adult animals look like puppies all their lives.
9. Whippet
The Whippet is one of the greyhounds and therefore has a long snout in common with its conspecifics.
Like most sighthound breeds, the Whippet is very fast, but is also lazy at long distances. He is considered to be very clean and easy to care for, friendly, calm and playful.
10. Bedlington Terriers
What initially looks like a sheep turns out to be a dog on closer inspection. The Bedlington Terrier is a fearless hunter and is therefore often used as a hunting dog.
The wild curls run over the entire long snout, which gives the terrier a distinctive look.
The dogs are extremely loving and trusting, can be trained well and are considered hypoallergenic, which means they hardly trigger allergies.
White Bedlington Terriers are born with black fur. It only gets brighter over time.
11. Italian Greyhound
It’s an odd name for a dog breed. But that’s actually the official name. Where the name comes from is largely unknown.
The greyhound not only has a long snout, it is also considered to be particularly quiet. The dog hardly ever barks, is obedient and equally intelligent.
The dogs shed very little and are relatively old at an average of 15 years.
Many dogs bark loudly when they are visited. The Italian greyhound is naturally timid and prefers to hide behind your legs.
12. Galgo Espanol
A long-nosed representative originating from Spain is the Galgo Español. While he is a popular family dog today, in the past he was mostly used for hunting.
In Spain, this breed is still very widespread today. Many of these animals are abused and abandoned. These animals, who are grateful and friendly by nature, often find their way to Germany via animal rescuers, hopefully to find a well-deserved family connection.
curious: The Galgo Español is also very friendly towards cats. He often behaves like a cat himself. He sleeps a lot, gracefully licks his paws and moves very gracefully and elegantly.
